Governor Sanford Issues Statement on Chief Stewart’s Retirement

GOVERNOR THANKS STEWART FOR HIS YEARS OF SERVICE AT SLED

November 19, 2007

Columbia, S.C. –Governor Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on Chief Robert Stewart’s retirement from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED):

“I don’t think anyone who leads an agency in South Carolina could serve under four different governors and through five Senate confirmations without being a consummate professional in every sense of the word,” Gov. Sanford said. “The Chief has set a high standard not just at his agency, but for all law enforcement. His service will be missed, and he’s certainly leaving big shoes to fill.”

Gov. Sanford said during today’s news conference that he has asked SLED Major Mark Keel to lead the agency in the interim while the governor conducts a search for a permanent replacement.
