Governor: Tax Day Highlights Need for Further Relief
Governor Notes Historic Tax Cut for Small Businesses as Senate Prepares to Grow Government by $1 Billion
Columbia, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford issued the following statement on today's quarterly estimated tax returns being filed by small businesses as the Senate prepares to substantially grow government without providing further tax relief:
"The good news for today is that thousands of small business owners across South Carolina are about to receive the first installment on a tax cut we fought for three years to get," Gov. Sanford said. "Small businesses are the backbone of our state's economy, and I believe this tax cut will go a long way toward helping those businesses grow and create jobs."
"It's particularly ironic, though, that these tax returns are being filed at the same time our state Senate is preparing to grow government by nearly $1 billion without sending any new dollars back to the hardworking taxpayers of this state," Gov. Sanford said. "Compare that to Oklahoma, where the Wall Street Journal recently wrote about Democrats and Republicans literally fighting with one another over who could cut taxes more. As this budget debate goes forward, I'd ask friends in the Senate who believe, like me, that this kind of government growth is unacceptable and that taxpayers shouldn't be left out of the equation to make their voices heard on the Senate floor."
