Gov. Sanford Issues Statement on Unemployment Rate

Columbia, S.C. - Governor Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on South Carolina's unemployment rate dropping to 6.2 percent - the lowest point since October 2002 and lower than when Gov. Sanford took office in January 2003:

"Anytime there's this significant a drop in the unemployment rate, it's obviously great news for our state," Gov. Sanford said. "I believe the far more telling number is the fact that according to today's Bureau of Labor Statistics report there are over 112,000 more South Carolinians working than there were three years ago. This number means we've outpaced two-thirds of the nation in percentage job growth over that same time period. But let's be very clear - regardless of month-to-month changes in the unemployment rate, there's still more to be done. That means continuing to work toward a more competitive business climate with lower taxes, less government spending and changes like reforming workers' compensation."
