Gov. Sanford Issues Statement on Mohawk Industries Expansion
Company Expanding in Bennettsville to Employ 300 Additional Workers
Columbia, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on Mohawk Industries' expansion in Bennettsville, South Carolina, after the rug and carpet manufacturer today officially opened its recent $70 million, 300 job expansion facility:
"Mohawk's decision to expand its presence in our state is one more sign that we're moving in the right direction with respect to our economy," Gov. Sanford said. "With over 112,000 more people working in South Carolina than there were three years ago, this expansion represents another step toward our goals of creating jobs and raising income levels in our state -- and we're going to further those efforts by continuing to better the soil conditions for businesses growth through lower taxes, slower government growth and changes like tort reform and workers comp reform."
South Carolina's unemployment rate recently dropped to 6.2 percent - the lowest point since October 2002 and lower than when Gov. Sanford took office in January 2003. From January of 2003 through January of 2006, South Carolina outpaced two-thirds of the nation in percentage of job growth.
