Governor Mark Sanford with Reggie Lloyd
Gov. Sanford Names Reggie Lloyd as SLED Chief

U.S. ATTORNEY, FORMER JUDGE NOMINATED TO LEAD STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION

Columbia, S.C. - January 11, 2008 - Gov. Mark Sanford today nominated U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd to become chief of the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Lloyd, 40, was in 2006 named United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina. In that capacity, Lloyd served as chief federal prosecutor for the State of South Carolina and chairman of the district's Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee. Prior to that, Lloyd served as a South Carolina Circuit Court judge for three years. Before being elected judge, Lloyd practiced law in Columbia in both the private and public sectors, most recently for the firm Nelson Mullins, and prior to that for the House Judiciary Committee and the S.C. Attorney General’s Office.

Lloyd would become only the third chief in the past 50 years, and the first African-American to lead the agency since its inception.

“The role of SLED Chief is all about having a personal commitment to justice and upholding the law, and those are qualities I think Reggie has exemplified both in his capacity as a judge and as a U.S. Attorney,” Gov. Sanford said. “As an administration, we’ve also long held the belief that there is a real value in bringing someone from outside an agency in, because that brings with it new ideas and new perspectives on running that agency.”

Lloyd will begin work at the agency pending Senate confirmation.

“I want to thank Governor Sanford for the honor of his nomination to be the Director of SLED, which is an agency that is critical to the battle against crime in South Carolina, as well as to the improvement and protection of the quality of life and economic opportunity that the Governor has placed as a priority for our State. I respect and look forward to the confirmation process that will follow and will work hard to be worthy of Governor Sanford’s nomination,” Lloyd said.
