Governor Sanford: Today's DOT Actions 'Disturbing'

Governor Says Questions Over Meeting's Legality, Appointment of New Commissioner Raise Concerns

Columbia, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on reports of a non-noticed meeting held by the state Department of Transportation Commission, and the selection of a new DOT commissioner:

"What's gone on today with the DOT is incredibly disturbing on a number of fronts, and again highlights the need to de-politicize that agency with reform efforts underway in the House and Senate," Gov. Sanford said. "We've heard reports of a Commission meeting that may have been held without sufficient public notice, and some very serious questions have been raised about the appointment of a new 1st District Commissioner. As well, we understand some commissioners may have been pressured into signing off on a document that in effect short-circuited their efforts to de-politicize the process of road project funding. These kinds of actions further highlight the dysfunction and politicization of this agency that has led to millions of dollars wasted at the DOT and roads across South Carolina in dire need of repair. Reform-minded legislators in the House and Senate need to continue making their voices heard for reform."
