Route Announced for First Family's May 5th Bike Ride, Run/Walk
Bike Ride from Aiken to Estill and 5k Run/Walk to Kick Off 2007 Family Fitness Challenge
Columbia, S.C. - Gov. Mark Sanford and First Lady Jenny Sanford today announced routes for their May bike ride and a 5k run/walk as part of their 2007 Family Fitness Challenge, an initiative aimed at improving the health of South Carolinians by encouraging healthier decisions in their day-to-day lives. This year's events will take place on Saturday, May 5, with the bike ride beginning in Aiken and ending 77 miles later in Estill. Mrs. Sanford and Mrs. Betty Ryberg, wife of Sen. Greg Ryberg, will lead a 5k run/walk in Aiken.
"This bike ride and run/walk are an opportunity for every South Carolinian to get a little bit more active, whether you come out and run, walk or ride seven blocks, seven miles or the full 77 miles," Gov. Sanford said. "A big part of quality of life in our state goes back to how we look and feel as individual South Carolinians, and the fact is that too many of us don't get enough exercise and eat the wrong things, leading to our state being near the top of the list for a whole host of health problems due to unhealthy lifestyles. To that end, I'd invite all South Carolinians to come join with me, Jenny and the boys and take this step together toward a healthier state."
Logistical details for the ride and run/walk are now available in the "Family Fitness Challenge" section of the website. Participants can access maps of both the bike ride and the 5k run/walk route, as well as a registration form for the activities. All participants are encouraged to register.
The Family Fitness Challenge is part of a larger initiative, the Healthy SC Challenge, a results-oriented initiative aimed at motivating South Carolinians to start making choices to improve health and well-being.
