Governor, Solicitor Gowdy to Call for Tougher DUI Legislation

Governor to Join Upstate Solicitor, Other Law Enforcement Officials to Push for Tougher Drunk Driving Laws

Columbia, S.C. - Governor Mark Sanford will be in Spartanburg tomorrow (Friday, May 25, 2007) to join Solicitor Trey Gowdy and other law enforcement personnel in calling for the passage of tougher drunk driving laws. South Carolina's current DUI law is considered by many in law enforcement to be weak and unenforceable, a contributing factor in South Carolina's high DUI death rate. A tougher DUI bill has recently passed the S.C. House, and is awaiting action in the Senate. Gov. Sanford, Solicitor Gowdy and others will be addressing the need for that legislation so that more DUI deaths can be prevented.

Tomorrow's news conference will take place at the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office (8045 Howard Street) at 9:45 a.m. For more information or directions from your location, please contact Joel Sawyer in the Governor's Office at 803-734-2100.
