Statement from Gov. Henry McMaster on May 2018 Unemployment Rate

June 15, 2018

Columbia, S.C. - Governor Henry McMaster today released the following statement in response to the May 2018 unemployment rate dropping to 4.0 percent from 4.2 percent in April. May's unemployment rate marks the lowest seasonally adjusted rate since December of 2000.

"South Carolina just keeps winning. We have more South Carolinians working than ever before, a nearly 18-year low unemployment rate, and we have announced over 20,000 new jobs across the state in a year and a half. Those jobs, and the low unemployment rate that comes with them, mean more oppurtunities for South Carolinians, bigger paychecks, and more of them. We are going to continue to work tirelessly in the area of workforce development to make sure our people are willing and able to fill the jobs created by these companies investing in our state, and we will not stop fighting to lower taxes so South Carolinians can keep more of their hard-earned money."
